Wooden Skull - Memento Mori

This oak Vanitas sculpture dates from the late 19th century. The carved skull is patinated. The skull with 2 crossed bones symbolizes the victory of death: we will all die someday. Memento Mori.
The Vanitas theme, already used in Roman times, became popular in the Baroque era with a revival in the late 1800s.
