This low easy chair was designed by Maarten Van Severen in 1988 as the F88 – Fauteuil 1988, one of his first designs. Since 1999 it was manufactured by Top Mouton and since 2013 by Lensvelt as the S88.
This chair is an early Top Mouton production, in a different color combination. The strong black saddle leather back fits perfectly in the steel strips and the low base. The thick white canvas cushion provides a comfortable seating height.
Initial Van Severen designed and produced this chair for his own use, because he could never find furniture to his liking. F88 is a very low easy chair, so low that you can place your glass of wine on the floor next to you. It also accentuates a woman’s legs. The curved leather back rest provides warmth and a sense of enclosure.
This S88 chair is in good authentic condition.
Maarten Van Severen (1956 – 2005) is one of the best-known contemporary Belgian designers. In the late eighties he started to create furniture in his own workshop in Gent. His designs are simple, clear and well thought-out.
They reflect his quest for perfection in form, detail and execution. He prefers to call himself a maximalist – someone who unstintingly devotes all his energy and resources to achieving the desired result, even if that ultimately and perhaps inevitable appears minimalist.
