Red Cabinet by Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax
Red Cabinet by Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax
This rare cabinet was designed by Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax in the early 1950s.
The open black lacquered metal frame holds 2 wooden shelves and a small cabinet with a metal door. The metal door with its elegant wooden handle is red painted. The original paint was in such a poor condition that we chose to paint it again in its original color. This type of cabinet was probably designed for a single project.
This cabinet is in very good condition.
Willy van der Meeren (1923 – 2002) was a Belgian architect and furniture designer, he played a prominent role in the Belgian furniture design of the 1950s.
In 1951 his furniture designs appeared in La Jeune Décoration, an exhibition and competition organized in Brussels. Van Der Meeren did not win the prize but he did attract the attention of Jan Vits, the owner of the metalworking company Tubax. The cooperation between Van Der Meeren and Tubax was a fact. From 1951 to 1958 he designed for Tubax a whole catalogue of furniture for “the contemporary home”.
