Helmet Garde du Corps/ Garde Cuirassier - Model 1889
Helmet Garde du Corps/ Garde Cuirassier - Model 1889
An outstanding helmet as worn by the personal guard of the German emperor Wilhelm II. One of the most elegant and well designed spike helmets (pickelhaubes) Polished brass skull and trimmed in nickel, brass brim and “lobster tail”. Black/white/red, black/white/black cockades attached to leather backed brass chin scales. Front helmet plate is raised, silver sunburst around the badge of the Order of the Black Eagle , with the text “MIT GOTT FÜR KÖNIG UND VATERLAND -1860” (tr. “with God for King and Fatherland”) arranged around it. On special occasions, the spike on top of the helmet was removed and replaced with a silver eagle (eagle not included). Some old soldering repairs on both sides of inner lobstertail.(NO EXTRA HOLES underneath the helmet plate or spike area which is a good and strong indication that the helmet spike and plate are still original and belonging to each other for more then a century.) Dark brown leather liner, front underside visor painted green, rear “lobster tail” underside painted black. Helmet marked with depotmarkings G.K.R. 2 E, which means Garde Kurassier Regiment 2nd squadron.
An amazing piece of history and beautifully designed and (partially hand)crafted object.
