African Tribal Bronze Sculpture - Female Warrior on a Horse
African Tribal Bronze Sculpture - Female Warrior on a Horse
This large African bronze sculpture features a female rider on a horse. It’s an expressive and brutalist sculpture in full action. The female warrior has a spear at ready and the horse is rearing.
Horses and riders are highly ranked in the hierarchy of the African culture, they stand for prestige, power and wealth. The attire of the rider and the bridle of the horse are beautiful.
Made with the lost wax casting process the sculpture still shows the artist’s hand and the original clay sculpture. Due to the primitive casting process it has some casting flaws.
The bronze is not pure, but an alloy of copper and various types of metal, perhaps it is better to call it ‘copper alloy’.
This sculpture is large and heavy, it consists of 3 components: the marble base (added later), the horse and the woman.
This sculpture is expressive and dynamic, it is very decorative. It can be dated mid 20th century, possible from Benin. It’s a speciale piece, nice details and a beautiful patina, hard to find.
