Prussian Regiment Garde du Corps Helmet or Guarde Cuirassier Guards Helmet
Prussian Regiment Garde du Corps Helmet or Guarde Cuirassier Guards Helmet
A model 1889 helmet for officers, of the Prussian Regiment Garde du Corps or Guarde Cuirassier Guards .
An outstanding helmet as worn by the personal guard of the German emperor Wilhelm II. One of the most elegant and well designed spike helmets (pickelhaubes). Light helmet skull of gilt tombac with stepped front visor, silvered trims, rivets, and mounts. The front visor lined with green leather, the neck guard “lobster tail” with black velvet, fine leather sweatband with light beige silk rep, silver helmet plate with polychrome enamelled medallion. Gilt, domed chinscales on clover leaves, large officer cockades. Silvered parade eagle with gilt crown. The Black/white/red, black/white/black officer style cockades attached to leather backed golden cambered metal chin scales. To the front of the helmet is fitted a silvered officer style garde star front plate of multi-piece construction, with an enamelled Black Eagle Order design to the centre. Above the eagle is the legend, ‘SUUM CUIQUE,’ picked out in gilt metal, and beneath, a wreath of enamelled laurel leaves; both on a circular white enamel backing. ( NO DAMAGE TO THE ENAMEL) Front helmet plate is raised, silver sunburst around the badge of the Order of the Black Eagle , with the text “MIT GOTT FÜR KÖNIG UND VATERLAND -1860” (tr. “with God for King and Fatherland”) arranged around it. On special occasions, the spike on top of the helmet was removed and replaced with a silver eagle (spike is not included). Some old and very small dents at the back of to helmet body close to the tail of the eagle as can be seen in photos which can be undented by a professional or left as is … helmet is also not cleaned in ages .
(NO EXTRA HOLES underneath the helmet plate or spike area which is a good and strong indication that the helmet officer style eagle and enameled front plate are still original and belonging to each other and the helmet for more then a century.)
An amazing piece of history and beautifully designed and (partially hand) crafted object.
